Artists Residencies

Creating a home for the world's finest performers.

A national model for The New American University, the ASU Gammage Residency brings the world's most celebrated contemporary performing artists to ASU for a three year guest residency of performance, intensive teaching, career mentoring and community engagement.

The ability to see ourselves, our society and the world with boundless imagination and possibility comes so often through the eyes of our artists. The artist is on the leading edge of cultural discourse and transformation and as such plays a vital role in all of our lives. An increasingly precious resource for today’s creative artist is the time and space to create and collaborate – the ability to experiment and grow. World renowned contemporary choreographer/director Bill T. Jones is an artist that has experimented, questioned, pushed and amazed for over three decades – Bill T. Jones is the next Gammage Residency Artist.

The Gammage Residency represents a three-year commitment to an extraordinary performing artist that includes performance, creative time and resources, intensive training for ASU students and local artists and engagement with many of the local communities. The first Gammage Residency artist was the remarkable young musician/composer Daniel Bernard Roumain. The Gammage Residency continued with the acclaimed contemporary theater ensemble and director, SITI Company and Anne Bogart.

The Gammage Residency tradition moves forward with two time Tony® Award winner and Kennedy Center Honoree Bill T. Jones. Mr. Jones is simply one of the most acclaimed contemporary artists working in the world today. His long time global presence as an artist, social commentator and intellectual was most recently acknowledged by the Government of France with the awarding of one of that country’s highest honors bestowed on a foreign artist; Chevalier — The Order of Arts and Letters. Mr. Jones and The Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Company’s time at ASU will prove invaluable to the educational experience of ASU students and faculty and continue to put ASU Gammage on the world stage as a leading arts presenter. A vibrant society requires the voice of our artists – The Gammage Residency is helping to make that possible. ASU Gammage is honored to welcome Bill T. Jones as the next Gammage Residency Artist.

This residency is underwritten by the Way Family Foundation and Margaret T. Morris Foundation.

ASU Gammage acknowledges the generous support of our season sponsors.
