Sustainability Takes the Spotlight: ASU Gammage Aligns with Broadway Green Alliance

ASU Gammage Executive Director and Vice President for ASU Cultural Affairs, Colleen Jennings-Roggensack, has joined the newly established Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) board, furthering Arizona State University’s global leadership in sustainability and the performing arts.

The Broadway Green Alliance — founded by WICKED producer David Stone — brings together leaders from across theater, film, music, and environmental sectors to reduce the industry’s ecological footprint. Jennings-Roggensack said the BGA’s mission directly reflects ASU and ASU Gammage’s commitment to assuming responsibility for the planet’s future.

“This is in line with our ASU Gammage mission of Connecting Communities and the ASU Charter,” Jennings-Roggensack said. “We are about assuming responsibility for the economy, for the culture, and for the health of the communities we serve.”

Sustainability has long been part of ASU Gammage’s operations — from QR-coded digital programs and soy-based recyclable show programs, to refillable water stations and backstage recycling for touring productions. The venue was among the first theaters in the country to receive green certification.

Through the new BGA board, Jennings-Roggensack aims to connect ASU’s world-renowned Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory and ASU theater students with national and international sustainability initiatives.

“I’m excited to engage our students and link the Broadway Green Alliance to ASU’s sustainability programs,” she said. “Our young theater artists need to see themselves as cultural advocates who play a role in the health of our planet.”

Led by BGA Director Molly Braverman, the Alliance includes artists and producers such as Idina Menzel and David Stone, along with environmental experts and entertainment leaders. The BGA’s outreach extends globally through partnerships with organizations like Julie’s Bicycle in London’s West End.

“The Broadway Green Alliance reflects exactly what Arizona State University stands for — innovation, global connection, and sustainability,” Jennings-Roggensack said.
