Direct from Broadway, the smash-hit musical AMERICAN IDIOT tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Based on Green Day’s GRAMMY® Award-winning multi-platinum album and featuring the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track, AMERICAN IDIOT boldly takes the American musical where it’s never gone before. With direction by Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), choreography by Stephen Hoggett (Black Watch) and orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), the result is an experience Charles Isherwood of The New York Times declares “thrilling, emotionally charged and as moving as any Broadway musical I’ve seen this year!”

AMERICAN IDIOT - April 24 - 29, 2012
WHAT’S IT ABOUT? This new musical follows the exhilarating journey of a new generation of young Americans, led by friends Johnny, Tunny and Will, as they struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world, borne along by Green Day’s electrifying score. When the three friends flee the constraints ofmtheir hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged when Tunny enters the armed forces, Will is called back home to attend familial responsibilities, and Johnny’s attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. This high-octane show includes every song from Green Day’s album American Idiot, as well as several songs from follow-up release, 21st Century Breakdown.
SHOULD I SEE IT? Yes! An energy-fueled rock opera, American Idiot, features less dialogue than more traditional musicals and instead relies on the lyrics from Green Day’s ground breaking album to execute the story line. The stage is festooned by a collage of art and newspaper clippings as well as over a dozen embedded TV monitors. The televisions flash everything from broadcast news, graphic warning messages and clips from recognizable TV series—all while an on stage band performs, often with the actors picking up instruments themselves. The material is dark with some characters even hitting rock bottom, but the rousing score keeps things upbeat throughout the entire 90-minute show.
IS AMERICAN IDIOT GOOD FOR KIDS? While TEENS will dig the rock music, parents should recognize many of Green Day’s hits relate to angst-filled themes, and the subject matter is mature. The show contains adult content, strong language and simulated use and ultimate rejection of drugs.
